Packed Space under the Moon
“I draw inspiration from plastic packaging and from the symbolism of the moon in prehistory. In Japan’s prehistoric Jōmon period, snakes and the moon were universal symbols of material regeneration; snakes in particular often appeared as decorative motifs on ceramic vessels. There are also historical accounts of the belief that rain came from the moon, and that this rainwater was collected in ceramic vessels to be used in funeral rites.”

Trained in Japanese traditional ceramics and fine arts, Ayaka Terajima looks at how design and materiality are transformed in the process of mass production, and at the material and spiritual regenerations we face in contemporary society.
