Artist Laura Scalia

Laura Scalia

1986, Palermo. Lives and works in Palermo

Scalia trained in painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Palermo (enrolled 2013), arriving from earlier studies in tourism. Her work turns on the intimate dimension of the individual, using painting and installation to evoke a domestic environment belonging to the private, everyday sphere. As a Sicilian artist she initially grounded her research in the autochthony of the pictorial sign, drawing on local tradition — wrought-iron work, embroidery, the characteristic decoration of majolica. Personal objects are at once preserved within the painted surface and made guardians of an intimate space, whose universality lets each viewer recognise themselves in a past and relive their own, in a place that carries both individual and collective memory.
