Artist Stephan Engelke

Stephan Engelke

Based in Duisburg / Düsseldorf

Stephan Engelke’s work encompasses freestanding sculptures, relief-like wall objects, installations, as well as works on and made of paper. Often, various lines of process - of varying duration and complexity - lead to ever-changing, frequently temporary images: constellations of materials and elements that have undergone different degrees of treatment at various points in time.
The artist occasionally subjects even supposedly finished pictorial objects to critical examination and revision, without their previous states completely losing their validity. As part of the process of creating later configurations, these works become genealogically linked to one another. At the same time, other connections arise through formal or thematic affinities, as seen, for example, in explicit series.
In general, transformation, deconstruction, and reconstruction play a central role in Engelke's practice, as do ordering and reordering according to shifting criteria, and the constant interplay between rules and their disruption.
