Richard Deacon
BED
RizzutoGallery is proud to present BED - a solo exhibition by Richard Deacon, the internationally renowned British sculptor and winner of the prestigious Turner Prize.
The exhibition will be inaugurated - in the presence of the Artist - on Thursday, March 13th, 2025 from 5 to 8 PM at the Gallery's German venue in Düsseldorf at Ackerstraße 34. The exhibition will remain on view until April 12th, 2025.
On display will be Fall, a voluptuous horizontal wooden sculpture, as well as a selection of recent works on paper created by Deacon specifically for the exhibition at RizzutoGallery, all belonging to the BED series from which the exhibition takes its title. Created through successive layers of marks and colours, these Deacon's graphic works evoke a layering process where each layer overlaps the previous one, reflecting the gradual accumulation and depth of the work.
Bed is a useful little word in English. Of course it's the place you sleep on in the bedroom but it can also be indicative of a life stage - sick bed, marriage bed, etc. In the gardens it's a cultivated area - flower bed, vegetable bed, seed bed etc. In geology, sedimentary rocks are laid down in beds (...) The ocean bed, lake bed or river bed are the floor of these bodies of water. There is also a sexual connotation in this word, to bed someone is to have sex with them. Newspapers were put to bed when the first edition went to the printers and the presses started to turn.. Beds can be made or unmade, and, the saying goes, “if you've made your bed you have to lie on it”. In the Bible, it becomes synonymous with healing: the paralytic 'took up his bed and walked' meaning he came back to health. (...) For this concatenation of signifiers, I therefore think Bed is a good title for this series of drawings, numbered according to the sequence in which they were made. [Richard Deacon, 2024]
Richard Deacon (Bangor - Wales, UK, 1949), internationally renowned British artist and winner of the prestigious Turner Prize in 1987, is the author of sinuous and articulated sculptures in which he combines craftsmanship with sophisticated engineering techniques. Working with a wide range of materials, Deacon creates works of varying scale, from domestic and museum-sized pieces to environmental works, where the concept of a central void acts as both a physical and symbolic generative core.
While working in the field of sculpture, Deacon has always engaged in continuous experimentation, moving from sculpture to audio-video, from painting to decoration, from experimental languages to fine art graphics.
With over five hundred exhibitions in galleries and public museum spaces in major cities worldwide, Deacon has been invited to the most prestigious events on the international scene, awarded significan prizes and commissioned to create important public works. He has also dedicated much time to teaching, first in various British institutions and then, for many years, at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf.
In 2024, the Academy of Fine Arts in Palermo awarded Richard Deacon the title of Academician of Honour.
